Lazlo's Corner

"Everything dies, baby, that's a fact But maybe everything that dies some day comes back"
- Bruce Springsteen

That lyric has rattled around in my head a few times in the past couple of weeks.

I've watched music venues come and go in my life... some of my favorites have been turned to rubble.

Others, like Asbury Lanes, no longer looks like its former self, and doesn't have the same vibe it once did, but it still exists as a live music venue. Even if it is nice the same, I'm glad it still hosts live music shows.

Two other shuttered venues appear to be reopening in different forms.

A few weeks back it was announced that The Court Tavern in New Brunswick is going to become a new vegan establishment that plans to once again host live music shows (https://newbrunswicktoday.com/2024/02/court-tavern-to-become-vegan-restaurant-this-spring). Sure, it won't have the Court Tavern name, and likely will look pretty different, but if the venue can bring live original music back from the basements of New Brunswick, that is a good thing in my book.

Nothing wrong with basement shows, by the way, but they are difficult to promote, can be shut down by the police, and when you're my age people assume I must be a parent to a kid in a band.

The other venue coming back is The Saint in Asbury Park... though not at their original location (https://gardenstate.social/@BlowUpRadio/112089823834867274). They are moving to Cookman Ave, and appear to be taking over part of the space House of Independents used to occupy. This could be a great move for this venue, as I've been going to the Saint since it first opened, before they had a stage, and while the sound was almost always great there, I never found the venue to be all that comfortable, especially when crowded. In the pictures released so far, this new space may be a little bigger, and hopefully will have better air conditioning during the summer.

Everything that dies may not come back, but I am excited to see some shuttered original music venues coming back.
