Lazlo's Corner

People often ask me what I am currently listening to, and I always with respond with something to the effect of, "Dude! I do two new music shows every week and a New & Notable column, all of which is about music I am enjoying." And people are like, oh yeah, right.

But far fewer people ask me what I am watching, and I generally don't talk much about that (except maybe the occasional post on Mastodon: https://gardenstate.social/@BlowUpRadio).

I don't even have a lot of time to watch things these days, and generally only get to watch shows/movies while exercising early in the morning.

So here are some things I've been watching recently that I really enjoyed.

Deadloch (Amazon Prime): This is a superb darkly comedic murder mystery set in a small town in Tasmania. The two detectives happen to be strong females, with very different personalities, which made for an enjoyable watch. Also, it was a mystery where I couldn't tell who the murderer was right away, which is always a plus.

Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man In The Pool (Netflix): Mike Birbiglia's one man shows consistently crack me up. His hilarious storytelling is a joy.

Albert Brooks: Defending My Life (Max): Long time friend Rob Reiner directs and interviews Albert Brooks in this highly entertaining documentary about his career in stand-up and film. Plenty of very funny clips of his work throughout.

Happy Death Day & Happy Death Day 2 U (DVDs): Sadly, these 2 films don't appear to be on streaming at the moment. While these films are listed as horror, they are not really trying to be scary or horrific. The first film is a brilliant twist on the Groundhog Day concept with college student Tree, reliving the same day over and over again until she can figure out who is killing her. The sequel... I feel like saying too much about the sequel gives away the brilliance of how it subverts the typical sequel.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (Netflix): Speaking of things that subvert, I thought re-doing Scott Pilgrim's story as anime was a bad idea. I loved the movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (and the graphic novels the movie was based on), and didn't want to see a retelling that would tarnish the movie. An inspired new take avoided that pitfall and may have even made the anime better than the movie (to me at least).

Obituary (Hulu): Another darkly comedic series, this one Irish. When obituary writer Elvira is told she will only get paid by the obituary, she takes matters into her own hands and starts selectively killing people. The show is far more complicated than that, and has subplots and other stories going on that all tie together wonderfully by the end of the season. I kind of hope this doesn't have a second season, because I'm not sure where they could go that would make a new season as compelling.

Scavengers Reign (Max): A gorgeous adult animated drama about the crew of a damaged space freighter surviving on a planet their escape pods crashed on. There was something special about this series in being perfectly different (much like the more comedic adult animated series on Max earlier this year, Fired On Mars was also very unique, which I also highly recommend). A real gem.

Ghosts UK (CBS/Paramount+): Back in 2020 when HBOMax went live I discovered the BBC series Ghosts on there and loved British wit of the series. Sadly, I felt the American version was not as funny and just could not get into it. If one good thing came from the prolonged strike (outside of Writers & Actors getting better contracts) it is that CBS is now airing the UK version of Ghosts. Hopefully they will continue to, as season 4 never made it to Max (and season 5 (their final season) is in the works).

Penn & Teller: Fool Us (CW): Crazy to realize that season 10 of this series just began, but this remains a unique opportunity to see amazingly talented magicians. I don't really care if they fool Penn & Teller or not, I am just astounded at how creative the magicians are. Even if they are doing a trick that has been done for decades, they usually have a fresh take on it to make it feel new.

Wisdom Gone Wild (PBS): Part of PBS's POV series, Wisdom Gone Wild was filmed over 16 years of a daughter watching, and caring for, her mother succumbing to dementia. As someone caring for a mother in law with dementia, I wasn't sure if I could handle watching this documentary. Thankfully, they found a way to bring some lightness to this dark subject, and I found it quite comforting to see some relatable moments in this film.

I could go on, as there are more things I could mention... okay in short, Gen V (Amazon Prime), Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Netflix or Hulu) (note, I am talking about the anime, not the live action film which was not good), Lego Masters (Fox), Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free (Amazon Prime), Doom Patrol (Max).

If you've heard or seen something good lately, let me know.
