Lazlo's Corner

I am writing this week's corner shortly after seeing the US Women's National Team eliminated from the World Cup by penalty kicks... one penalty kick that according to VAR went into the goal by maybe the width of a strand of hair.

Funny thing is, I'm not even too disappointed by that because when I woke up this morning I expected the USWNT to lose based on how they played in the previous games, but today they played very well, and if not for Sweden's goaltender being outstanding, they probably would have won.

But this corner isn't about soccer.

I want to talk about expectations.

We have expectations in all things, including music.

If someone says The Beatles, you have an expectation of what they would sound like. But, there is a pretty big difference between The Beatles who did "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (or other early Beatles tunes), and "Dig A Pony" (or other latter-day Beatles tunes).

When I get a new album by an artist whose music I am previously familiar with I try not to go in with expectations, just like I would hope the musicians do when they write/record new music. It would be easy to fall into a trap of writing the same song over an over again because the fanbase liked it, but it would also be, to me at least, less interesting each time because they would be trying to meet a preconceived expectation.

So when listening to music, try not to have expectations. There have been artists whose music I could not stand, that then put out music I absolutely loved (and vice-versa), but you have to be open to not pre-judging based on their past.

And if you are a music maker, don't put expectations on the music you are writing.

For compilations that BlowUpRadio.com has done (like our upcoming 16th annual Banding Together), we sometimes get songs from artists where they say the song doesn't fit with their usual sound. These songs tend to be incredible! While I am thrilled to be able to use them on the compilation, artists should not have the expectation that their sound has to rigidly conform to one thing. Many of my favorite artists are ones that I never known what to expect on an album, because they allow themselves to write what comes to them and not try to restructure it to a specific sound.

In conclusion, try not to have expectations, and treat every song you hear or write, as a new experience.

And, as I've been saying for ages, no game should be decided by Penalty Kicks.

(apologies if this didn't come together coherently, I'm kind of still fixated on the VAR image of that penalty kick "goal")

~

So much work going on behind the scene to prepare for our annual Banding Together benefit webathon for the Spondylitis Association Of America.

October 13th-15th seems so far away, but it is just 2 and a half months from now, and there is much work to be done for our 16th year of this benefit.

There are scores of artists performing a 30 minute live audio performance and/or submitting a previously unreleased original song (which can include acoustic or live versions of previously released songs, remixes, etc.) for this year's compilation, and I am so excited at the top notch talent involved!

If anyone is interested, there is still room, just e-mail me.

And, this year's Banding Together compilation will feature artwork from local artist Jenny Jaybles. I am a great fan of her work, and am honored that she is allowing us to use her work as the album cover. It will be a few weeks, at least, until we release the cover artwork, but you can check out her artwork, and order prints (I own two myself) here: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/jenny-jaybles
