Lazlo’s Corner

Sometimes music stirs the emotions in strange ways. Growing up I was huge fan of Journey. In the 80’s you couldn’t avoid their music with radio & MTV always playing them. They even had an arcade game (don’t believe me? Then watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFksPf8amMs)

When Journey announced they were reuniting in the 90’s, I had really looked forward to hearing what they would sound like after several years off. Sadly, “trial by fire”, their album with Steve Perry back was a a throwaway album (better off checking out Steve Perry’s solo album from just before it called, “for the love of strange medicine”).

Steve Perry decided not to continue on with Journey or perform in public since a solo tour in 1995. Journey have carried on with several different singers who all sound like Steve Perry, but I never had any interest in seeing or hearing this glorified tribute band (yes I know Journey existed, and recorded an album, before Steve Perry joined, but Journey without Steve Perry is not Journey to me).

So I was quite surprised today to see this footage from a concert Sunday, with of all bands, The Eels!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip4F9fGHZ00

Sure Steve Perry’s voice seemed a little out of practice (not singing publically in nearly two decades can do that), but I nearly teared up hearing him first singing the Eels “it’s a motherfucker” (according to him, one of his favorite songs...who know he was an Eels Fan?!?), and then singing some Journey classics with the Eels (another band I love, and whose latest album, “the cautionary tales of Mark Oliver Everett”, is one of my favorite albums of 2014 so far!)

If anyone had asked me who Steve Perry might decide to jump on stage and sing with, the Eels probably wouldn’t have even crossed my mind, but watching them together, I’d love to see them do a full show together alternating between Eels and Journey songs.

Unexpected collaborations like that can be magic!

Speaking of collaborations, go back to the top of this newsletter to read about June 21st at Espresso Joe’s. That is going to be one of those magic nights (though I do not expect Steve Perry or the Eels to show up...but if they’d like to all they need to do is contact me :)
