13 years and still going strong!
I've seen many a band come and go, some good, some great, some...some I won't speak off. Thankfully, most fall into the good or great category.
When I started BlowUpRadio.com it was because I was fed up with the mainstream rock station I was working at.
There were lots of reasons I was fed up, but one that kept bothering me was they refused to play local artists, except for the one song a day they played during a local spotlight.
The argument was that if the band was worth playing they will get signed and we'll play them then.
They failed to see the ridiculousness of their logic.
Radio used to be about championing bands you never heard of, but those days were long gone by the time I got there.
I mean, if you never hear the band on the radio, you're less likely to know they exist and go see them when they play locally, which a local band does regularly.
Internet radio gave me the opportunity to do what I wanted to, and while I probably had considerably more listeners when I worked for the rock radio station, I have full creative freedom here, and the people who tune in are people like you who really want to hear the best local bands out there (and on Lazlo's Den, the best bands out there), largely unknown on a greater scale (sadly).
I've been told by many a band that they've seen increases in hits to their website and album sales after I start playing them. That's awesome!
Truthfully, even if no one was listening, I'd still do this because this little hobby of mine is so fulfilling...way more so then my years in commercial radio.
22 years ago I spun my first record on the air at a college radio station (no I don't recall what it was).
I still have that same sense of excitement every time I get to play a great song for people!
I love what I do...could never say that when I worked at a commercial radio station...especially when I had to play bands like Creed.
