Lazlo’s Corner

So it’s the wrecking ball for yet another historic music venue in NJ.

http://www.app.com/article/20130707/NJENT01/307070095/Asbury-Lanes-expand-Fastlane-demolished?nclick_check=1

Sure the Fast Lane as been closed more than it has been open in the last 20 years, but that was a mistake that I had hoped Asbury Park would recognize and rectify.

For a town that claims to be about the arts and music scene, they sure seem to do a good job of destroying it, while putting in more upscale restaurants and bars.

Even Asbury Lanes, a venue I love, is likely to be demolished in 2015 (as alluded to in the article linked above, and stated more bluntly in other recent articles).

I am all for growth and change, what Asbury Park has done over the last 15 years should be commended to a certain extent. They turned Cookman Avenue into a restaurant row, and made the boardwalk a place people want to go to, but at the same time they have demolished a lot of what made Asbury Park great.

Palace Amusements (and the plans to build shops & amusements on that site has gone nowhere)

Baronet Theatre (a lot of people put a lot of effort into getting the Baronet reopened, and for about a year we had a glorious classic movie theater that also hosted concerts. Now all we have is an empty lot...talk about paved paradise...)

The Upstage Club (the real house that Bruce built)

and now the Fast Lane (where many great (and not so great) bands played).

I have fond memories of going to these places (except the Upstage Club, as I’m not that old), and every time one of these glorious buildings in Asbury Park falls, not only do we lose a piece of history, but a little part of me dies inside.

Sadly, the last show I saw at the Fast Lane when it briefly re-opened in 2007, ended on a sour note:
