Lazlo’s Corner

I am writing this just minutes after reading this story:

Maxwell's, a Hoboken rock institution, to close at the end of July
http://www.nj.com/entertainment/music/index.ssf/2013/06/maxwells_a_hoboken_rock_instit.html

This is truly a sad day...

Admittedly, I have not been to Maxwell’s in a few years, a combination of reasons have made it difficult to get up there.

That said, I have seen many a good show there, both touring bands and local bands. I was fortunate enough to co-host nights there with Artist Amplification, and introduce acts like Val Emmich, Hero Pattern, Evelyn Forever, Fairmont, Jim Testa, Little T & One Track Mike, the list goes on and on.

I also had the distinct honor of introducing double-breasted at their first live show ever, the only time I have ever introduced a band I had never heard before (no one had at that point). I have since seen them live and played their albums many times.

Many of these shows I am lucky enough to have recordings of, thanks to a minidisc player with an external mic, and the sound people at Maxwell’s who always made sure the sound was spot on and allowed me to place my mic right next to their mixing board for optimum sound quality.

I remember one night in particular, I think it was a Jersey Beat night, I brought my recording equipment and the bouncer stopped me and had what became a heated argument as he kept telling me I could not bring the recording equipment in. He assured me I was lying when I had said I had been there the week before and recorded without issue. This literally went on for more than 3 minutes before he admitted he was playing a practical joke on me, as he’d seen me record many shows there. At the time that incident wasn’t so funny to me...now I remember it fondly and smile.

This isn’t the first time I’ve watched Maxwell’s close, I remember when it became a microbrewery in the 90’s for a brief (but painful) period.

Much like when CBGBs, and the Wetlands closed in NYC, and closer to home, Tradewinds, and Birch Hill, Maxwell’s closing hurts. But I’ll always have the memories I’ve mentioned above, and so many more, and inevitably a new club will sprout somewhere else in NJ to carry on the torch of live original music. It will never be the same, but it will be the basis for new memories.

RIP Maxwell’s
