Concert Picks Of The Week

~

Lazlo (BlowUpRadio.com)

Saturday at Buddie's Tavern is the latest in BlowUpRadio.com's Free Concert Series. This month we feature singer-songwriter's John Raido, and Thomas Martin, as well as a set by singer-songwriter Mike Pek's band, Ghost Town Trilogy. Fun will ensue. Be there!

Jim Testa (Jersey Beat)

It's a very slow week for shows but even if it was much busier, my pick would still be BlowUpRadio.com's showcase at Buddie's Tavern on Saturday June 13 with Ghost Town Trilogy, Thomas Martin, and John Raido.

Pissed Off!

Seems there are bands in our local music scene that have the attitude of we're a band, and no band member should do any other project without the rest of the band.

This is sad on several levels

- the insecurity of a band that would not want one of it's members to pursue any artistic endeavor that does not involve them

- this stifles the band member and could ultimately lead to a situation like Jason Newsted essentially being forced out of Metallica because of his side project.

From Wikipedia
During a Playboy interview with Metallica, Newsted revealed intentions he wanted to release an album with Echobrain. Hetfield was against the idea and said, "When someone does a side project, it takes away from the strength of Metallica." Newsted countered his statement by citing Hetfield's contributions to other musical outlets. Hetfield replied, "My name isn't on those records. And I'm not out trying to sell them" and pondered questions such as "Where would it end? Does he start touring with it? Does he sell shirts? Is it his band?"

One should take a lesson from this tale, as Metallica lost a great bass player because of their insecure belief that it would take away, "from the strength of Metallica."

From what I've seen, artists doing side projects allows them to play songs that they can't do with their current band.

Take for instance Rhett Miller.

When he records with the Old 97's he's with the band, and the band makes decisions as a whole, so many songs he likes go unrecorded because the band doesn't like them.

Every so often Rhett releases a solo album where he has full creative control to make the music he can't make with his band. He still loves his band, and plays with them more often than not, but the freedom to express himself and get his other songs out there allows him not to fell stifled with the band.

It's a lesson some local bands need to learn.

That's all for this week folks.

Peace,
Lazlo
