Echofission has put out one of my favorite albums of the year thus far with, "the straights". This weekend you'll have 2 chances to hear them play songs from that album live. Friday night they play Shortway's Barn in norhtern NJ, and Saturday they'll be in Brooklyn at Da Funky Phish. Of course you can also see them for free on May 10th when they play my birthday bash at Buddie's Tavern.

This is New Brunswick's 3 Day Weekend, a truly underground music fest being organized by the Hub City's punk community who put on basement shows and organize concerts in alternative venues.
On Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26, there will be shows at Yoga Vayu, a small yoga studio at 354 George St. that will be transformed into a shows space for bands like Hunchback, Double Dagger, For Science, Screaming Females, Full of Fancy, and more. On Sunday, the Ergs! will headline a show at The Loft on Sandford Street. There will also be shows at basements throughout New Brunswick. Lousyland Studios in Long Branch will play host to a benefit for the Ronald McDonald House this Saturday afternoon. The all-day, all-ages event will feature performaces by the Lousy Break, the Wretched Ones, the Sex Zombies, the F-Bombers, the Black Clouds, and many more. Lousyland is located at 35 3rd Ave, Long Branch, NJ.

I was joking with a friend of mine earlier today that with gas prices so high I'm not sure if I'm going to make his show...only really I was only half joking. In the last week I watched gas prices go up another 20 cents a gallon.
In February, at a press conference, the president was asked about his advice for the average American “facing the prospect of $4 a gallon gasoline….
“Wait, what did you just say?’’ Bush asked. “You're predicting $4 a gallon gasoline?
“A number of analysts are predicting…’’ the reporter replied.
“That's interesting,’’ Bush said. “I hadn't heard that.’’

Well the $4 gallon is already here in parts of America, and now the $5 gallon of gas looks possible. Remember 8 years ago when gas was under a dollar. And how before we invaded Iraq it was under $.150 a gallon...I miss those days.
And what is Bush doing to try and help us?
"The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has defiantly held its daily output quota at 29.67 million barrels since its last meeting in March, despite repeated calls from US President George W. Bush to hike production."

The oil man from Texas can't get OPEC to increase production...the same oil man that has pissed off the world with his attitude...gee, I'm shocked.
And auto companies say that the electric car is years away from being a reality. Funny, there was an electric car, a quite good one that GM put out called the EV1. Maybe you saw a wonderful documentary about it called, "Who Killed the Electric Car?". If not, I highly recommend it (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489037/). Back in the 90's when the car was around, the battery lasted 60-70 miles before needing to be recharged, (later batteries for the EV1 lasted 110-160 miles). Research says the average driving distance of Americans in a day is 30 miles or less and that 90% of Americans could use electric cars in their daily commute. Towards the end of the film, an engineer explains that, as of the interview, lithium ion batteries, the same technology available in laptops, would have allowed the EV-1 to be upgraded to a range of 300 miles per charge.

The time is now people, we need to demand better of our government and car manufacturers.
"Who Killed The Electric Car?" shows how the California Air Resources Board passed the ZEV mandate in 1990, as well as the implications of the events depicted for air pollution, environmentalism, Middle East politics, and global warming. The film details the California Air Resources Board's reversal of the mandate after suits from automobile manufacturers, the oil industry, and the George W. Bush administration. It points out that Bush's chief influences, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, and Andrew Card, are all former executives and board members of oil and auto companies.

Gas prices are too high and none of the candidates have a good plan to fix it. McCain wants to "suspend the gasoline tax until Labor Day. This will effectively lower the price of gasoline at the pumps, thereby increasing demand for gasoline. As more gas is consumed more money is given to unstable nations and our trade deficit increases. A higher trade deficit lowers the value of the dollar and increases inflation. More pollution is also released into the air as resultant of more fuel consumption. McCain did not mention suspending construction work for interstates and highways, which is what the gasoline tax funds. Therefore, reducing the gasoline tax would increase the budget deficit by $10 billion. For a candidate that is running on a platform of stopping global warming, reducing government deficits, securing energy independence and stopping terrorism, this seems like the worst thing he could do."

Clinton and Obama don't have any better plan either.
"In a debate on ABC between Clinton and Obama, Clinton blamed a lot of individuals and groups for the rise in oil prices. This included the Bush administration, oil traders and big oil companies. She called for investigations and windfall profit taxes on oil companies. She also wanted to spend more money on alternative energy projects. Obama called for the same kinds of actions but at least put it in prospective that 1.7 billion people between China and India are going to start driving soon, so there is nothing we can really do about keeping oil cheap."

I like Obama, but what happened to "believe in change"?
After filling up my gas tank I'm lucky if I have any change...
My point is that we need to push harder to bring back the electric car. It's cheaper, more efficient, and much better for the environment.
This Earth Day let's push car manufacturers to bring back the electric car, and push all 3 candidates to back national legislation like the ZEV mandate.
