Supporting New Jersey's Local Music Scene Since 2000

Message From Lazlo

Hi Everyone,

As you have probably heard by now, Soundexchange had agreed to temporarily not enforce the royalty rate increase to internet radio stations while negotiations are still ongoing.

This means that for the moment BlowUpRadio.com's webcast will remain up and running.

However, in last week's newsletter I mentioned that listenership was down on the webcast, at least in part due to the amount of ads that Live365 (the service which hosts BlowUpRadio.com's webcast), was forced to add to offset the pending royalty rate hike. Sadly, the public did not outcry that they wanted the webcast to remain, nor did the listenership numbers go up greatly in the past week.

So I ask of you, since we stand at a crossroads here, which of the following would you like to see most:

Your vote will help determine the future of BlowUpRadio.com.

In the meantime, I am asking all bands that wish to have their music played on BlowUpRadio.com to sign a royalty waiver. Currently royalties are paid for all songs broadcast through the Live365 webcast, but if the podcast or larger jukebox is the direction that BlowUpRadio.com goes in I will need these waivers signed in order to continue playing your music. For more information please click here .

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of BlowUpRadio.com.

Lazlo's Den is still on the air for now also, airing, as always, Monday through Friday at 8PM ET on BlowUpRadio.com and UpstageRadio.

The Chilling Details - "innerdialogue"

The Chilling Details push the boundaries of rock-based music. Armed with an arsenal of influences the trio takes the stage not just willing to entertain you but to challenge you to exist outside the box of your everyday life.

With just three members, some say The Chilling Details live performances emulate Spector’s legendary “wall of sound”. Decibel, amplitude, and dynamics can be wielded like crude weapons or controlled like a skilled craftsman’s tools in the hands of the group which consists of charismatic front man Frank Bressi (vocals, guitars) and the booming rhythm section of Chris Smith (bass, vocals) and James Griffith (drums, vocals).

In the recording studio The Chilling Details communicate the fire of their live shows with an added clarity that is sure to set them apart from their peers. Taking the collection of songs penned by Bressi to great heights of texture and depth without losing the energy that have made their live shows shine for the crowds who have been steadily growing in number like summertime sun worshipers drawn the beaches of the same Jersey Shore that The Chilling Details call home.

LOCAL MUSIC NEWS
The Underpass lives... at The Alexus Tavern, 80 Wagaraw Road, in Hawthorne, NJ.

Russ, the sound engineer, tells me that The Underpass is back in operation at a new location -- bigger and better than ever -- just four miles from its former Elmwood Park location. The live music room is large, the stage is spacious -- as always, the sound will be stellar. Parking is plentiful, and, yes, even the bathrooms are beautiful. Beets and Russ are back in business...

"We're excited about our new arrangement at the Alexus and look forward to reuniting with all of The Underpass faithful. I started hunting around the area in April looking for ownership that understood what we do and a physical space that met certain requirements. Everybody's cool at The Alexus -- they're really looking forward to us being there, too -- and that was important. It may take a little while to get the word out that we've moved just up the road --we expect the Underpass' loyal following to make the new arrangement at The Alexus a success, and will definitely lead to a long and prosperous future for our unique, all-original music venue."

Expect the very best of The Underpass' musical roster, with more national acts possible, due to increased capacity. Russ's powerhouse sound system from The Underpass has been installed at the Alexus -- and he tells me it sounds better than ever. Joe Beets will continue to emcee the evenings, book bands and spin tunes. Working together, they'll provide exceptional sound, in a friendly atmosphere, while hosting some of the area's best original music -- everything you grew to love about the (fabulous) Underpass, but with better bathrooms. Incense will be noticeably absent in this incarnation of The Underpass, but it is replaced by great food at reasonable prices. Help keep quality original music alive in the area -- come out to the all-new Underpass at The Alexus Tavern in Hawthorne.

FIRST SHOW BACK: Friday, July 20th THE BUDDHA BRAINS w/ opener BUZZ HEAVY

SHOW STARTS AT 10 PM -- COME EARLY AND HAVE DINNER

Thereafter, the regular Underpass schedule is being followed:
Tuesday night -- open acoustic.
Wednesday night -- open electric jam.
Thursday and Friday -- the best in live, original music.
(Saturdays will not have live entertainment till the Fall.)

DIRECTIONS: From the former location, make a right on River Road and head north exactly four miles (River Road becomes Wagaraw Road) -- left into the large Alexus parking lot, across from the small shopping mall. Call 973-427-9200 for more info and check the Underpass website for updates and bookings: www.theunderpass.com.
Concert Picks of the Week

Lazlo (BlowUpRadio.com)

Two picks this week to rock your weekend.

Friday night The Misery Loves return to the Saint in Asbury Park. Along with them for this ecclectic evening of music is Alex Brumel, The Milwaukees, and Adam Streicher and the Molotov Cocktails.

Then Saturday night is a free punk rock show at Buddie's Tavern in Parlin (Sayreville), featuring Grover Kent, Six To Eight Mathematics, and Hola Diablo.
Jim Testa (Jersey Beat)

Thurs. 7/19
The Black Lips/Turbo Fruits/The Coathangers - Maxwells, 1039 Washington St. Hoboken - 9 p.m. $12 18+

The Black Lips are a scuzzy heavy-touring garage-rock combo from Atlanta who were one of the hits at this past year's SXSW music festival, where they managed to play 10 shows in the course of five whirlwind days and nights. The Turbo Fruits are the male members of Nashville's teenaged Be Your Own Pet, playing a bluesier and more glammy variation of rock 'n' roll. The Coathangers open.
Upcoming Concerts

Concert Picks of the Week

Gary Wien (Upstage)

90.5 The Night's Summer Soiree show on Saturday, July 21st at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park. A stellar lineup of locals and national acts is headlined by Fountains of Wayne. The bill also includes deSol, Drive By Truckers, April Smith & the Last Picture Show, Phil Bensen, Roadside Graves, Mike Doughty and more.
Jared Migden (WRSU)

This Friday night, the Milwaukees return to the Saint in Asbury Park along with Adam Streicher & the Molotov Cocktails and Readymade Breakup. I was lucky enough to catch a Milwaukees gig recently and I was impressed by the infusion of some more soulful vocals to their classic sound, and I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more, and it's always a party when RMBU and Adam Streicher are around!
