LOCAL MUSIC NEWS
The Underpass lives... at The Alexus Tavern, 80 Wagaraw Road, in Hawthorne, NJ.
Russ, the sound engineer, tells me that The Underpass is back in operation at a
new location -- bigger and better than ever -- just four miles from its former
Elmwood Park location. The live music room is large, the stage is spacious -- as
always, the sound will be stellar. Parking is plentiful, and, yes, even the
bathrooms are beautiful. Beets and Russ are back in business...
"We're excited about our new arrangement at the Alexus and look forward to
reuniting with all of The Underpass faithful. I started hunting around the area
in April looking for ownership that understood what we do and a physical space
that met certain requirements. Everybody's cool at The Alexus -- they're really
looking forward to us being there, too -- and that was important. It may take a
little while to get the word out that we've moved just up the road --we expect
the Underpass' loyal following to make the new arrangement at The Alexus a
success, and will definitely lead to a long and prosperous future for our
unique, all-original music venue."
Expect the very best of The Underpass' musical roster, with more national acts
possible, due to increased capacity. Russ's powerhouse sound system from The
Underpass has been installed at the Alexus -- and he tells me it sounds better
than ever. Joe Beets will continue to emcee the evenings, book bands and spin
tunes. Working together, they'll provide exceptional sound, in a friendly
atmosphere, while hosting some of the area's best original music -- everything
you grew to love about the (fabulous) Underpass, but with better bathrooms.
Incense will be noticeably absent in this incarnation of The Underpass, but it
is replaced by great food at reasonable prices. Help keep quality original music
alive in the area -- come out to the all-new Underpass at The Alexus Tavern in
Hawthorne.
FIRST SHOW BACK: Friday, July 20th THE BUDDHA BRAINS w/ opener BUZZ HEAVY
SHOW STARTS AT 10 PM -- COME EARLY AND HAVE DINNER
Thereafter, the regular Underpass schedule is being followed:
Tuesday night -- open acoustic.
Wednesday night -- open electric jam.
Thursday and Friday -- the best in live, original music.
(Saturdays will not have live entertainment till the Fall.)
DIRECTIONS: From the former location, make a right on River Road and head north
exactly four miles (River Road becomes Wagaraw Road) -- left into the large
Alexus parking lot, across from the small shopping mall. Call 973-427-9200 for
more info and check the Underpass website for updates and bookings:

The Black Lips/Turbo Fruits/The Coathangers - Maxwells, 1039 Washington St.
Hoboken - 9 p.m. $12 18+
The Black Lips are a scuzzy heavy-touring garage-rock combo from Atlanta who
were one of the hits at this past year's SXSW music festival, where they managed
to play 10 shows in the course of five whirlwind days and nights. The Turbo
Fruits are the male members of Nashville's teenaged Be Your Own Pet, playing a
bluesier and more glammy variation of rock 'n' roll. The Coathangers open.

Jared Migden (WRSU)
This Friday night, the Milwaukees return to the Saint in Asbury Park along with Adam Streicher &
the Molotov Cocktails and Readymade Breakup. I was lucky enough to catch a Milwaukees gig
recently and I was impressed by the infusion of some more soulful vocals to their classic sound,
and I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more, and it's always a party when RMBU and Adam
Streicher are around!
