Supporting New Jersey's Local Music Scene Since 2000

Message From Lazlo

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate my early birthday bash last Saturday, and a big thanks to all the very talented musicians who played (Jon Dacks, Agency, Kate Hart, Jim Testa, John Raido, and Joe Canzano).

An update on the Save Internet Radio Campaign. and Lazlo's Den will definitely be on the air until July 15th, when the new royalty rates go into effect, but it's future after that is in the hands of congress now. Last week I told you that U.S. Reps. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Donald Manzullo (R-Ill.) have filed legislation they hope will "prevent the demise of Internet radio." I am happy to report that 41 more co-sponsors have signed onto The Internet Radio Equality Act. Unfortunately, none of them are from NJ (despite my e-mails and calls to my representative).

So once again I want to give you this link:

Thank you for your help in saving, Lazlo's Den and internet radio.

Album of the Month
Matt Fisher & The Telephone Junkies - "the clock doesn't stop"

Matt Fisher and the Telephone Junkies play rock and roll music.

Fisher's songwriting style is heavily influenced by artists like Elvis Costello and Ben Folds, while the instrumental arrangements add the power-chord rock and simple, driving grooves of groups like Weezer. To top it off, Fisher and the Junkies provide an extremely tight and entertaining live act.

It all adds up to create a unique and memorable sound and a live show that is certainly worth seeing, especially in the age of auto-tune and ProTools. These boys remind us of what live rock and roll is all about. If you feel like you recognize a few of them, it's probably because you've seen them before. Fisher and Jones were previously in a group called the Sly Caps, who were featured on MTV's Made and Total Request Live (see MTV video here). After touring extensively in support of the band, Fisher thought it best to disband the group after having some creative differences.

As a solo artist, Fisher was backed by a revolving door of players, but in December 2005, Voinski and Jones decided to join the group for the long haul. Though the group entertained a line-up as a quartet for a while, it became apparent after a few months the group performed best as a trio. If you want to check out a great live act and meet a group of charming gentlemen, currently you can see Matt Fisher & the Telephone Junkies throughout NYC and in their home state of New Jersey.

As predicted by The Aquarian Weekly, Perfuma is among the elite few unsigned bands chosen to play this year’s Bamboozle festival, thanks to The Break Contest. Though around 250 acts took part in the Rockland Music Center sponsored completion, only a few survived numerous rounds of shows and scored serious points with the judges.

The panel of critics, which included members of Max Cruise Entertainment, based their scores on talent (30 %), performance (30 %), audience response (20 %) and votes by ballot (20%).

Perfuma will be bringing its raw rock to Bamboozle on Sunday, May 6 at 7:45 pm on the Pass the Mic stage. Don’t miss it!

Also check out “It’s Only Art,” off Perfuma’s Black Lung Sessions EP, on the upcoming first ever Break Compilation CD.

This is only just the beginning of excitement for the Little Falls, New Jersey natives. The new line-up brings ex-Pennyroyal Tucker on bass (you’ve seen him in just about every Hartke/Sam Ash ad around) and Rye Coalition’s Dave Leto (Dave Grohl called him the best drummer in the world) behind the kit. Adam Bird (vocals/guitar) and Eric Schnare (guitar) have already garnered a strong buzz by performing dirty rock tunes packed with power pop hooks, that led Absolute to say “This is without a doubt a band to keep on the radar ‘cause I call it now…GOING PLACES.”

Perfuma are currently in the studio working on a new album.

Saturday the Ocean Grove Music Fest features some excellent local artists including George Wirth, Jo Wymer, Danny White w/Tommy Anton & Jack Pyrah, and Arlam Feiles, among others. Best of all it's a free show, that runs from 10am to 6pm, so you can still catch a great show that evening somewhere else.
Jim Testa (Jersey Beat)

Thursday, May 10TH The Iron Monkey -
97 Greene Street, Downtown Jersey City , 10 pm, no cover, 21+

Some female-fronted rock here at this newish Jersey City venue, which converts from a toney sit-down restaurant after the dinner shift. Plastiq Passion are four gals who rock hard and have been making a name for themselves in the Jersey club scene of late; Kilsy fronts her own trio, bringing a heavy bass-driven throb to her Blondie-ish new wave tunes.
