Hey Everyone, Voting - I had planned today to tell you my choice for President, but everyone has an opinion, on the TV, radio, newspaper, website, e-mails, friends, family, co-workers...everywhere. Tomorrow is an important day, and it is important that everyone who can vote does, and I do mean everyone. For the last election showed how a few votes can make a big difference. But, one shouldn't care who I am going to vote for. One should read the facts and histories regarding all candidates and then make an informed choice on who to vote for. Kerry, Bush, Nader...they all have websites, & there's BBC news, CNN & the rest. There are entire sites out there dedicated to slandering all the candidates and ones reporting opinion over fact (some even do it subliminally)...My point is that when reading anything written about the candidates, remember the source. Should you vote? Yes! Should you believe everything you read about candidates as truth? No. Now get out there and vote! So instead of going on and on about voting, I'd like to talk for a moment about why I got into being a DJ in the first place. Growing up I loved listening to the radio, I'd tape my favorite songs off it, I'd fall asleep with a small boom box playing music by my side...I'd even dance and sing in front of the mirror along to the radio (oh come on, admit it, you did that too). Sometime while I was in high school I discovered this amazing radio show on Sunday nights that played all sorts of different music, and the DJ, he really got excited about playing the music...even if I didn't like a song, I'd be intrigued by his excitement of playing it, and his knowledge of music...the man was passionate about music. I decided then I wanted to be just like him. That man is Vin Scelsa, the host of Idiot's Delight which ran on K-ROCK when I first discovered him and then moved to WNEW. Idiot's Delight now runs Saturday nights on 90.7FM (WFUV). I forget if it was through Vin's show or elsewhere, but I learned of another great DJ that championed good music regardless of whether it was on a major label or was "trendy". That guy, John Peel broke reggae, punk, hip/hop and many other styles of music in Britain...and ultimately to the world. Sadly, he passed away last week. In recently years I was finally able to hear John Peel's show, thanks to the internet. Much like Vin Scelsa's show, John always played an ecclectic and unique mix of tunes with an excitement and energy that never seemed to cease, despite him having done radio for neartly 4 decades. I'm now a little over a decade into being a DJ and I hope in some way I am imparting the same joy & excitement of music to at least a few of you with my local music choices. The only positive aspect of John Peel's passing is that it has gotten people talking about what a DJ should be (see articles like this one). In this day and age, wouldn't it be nice to hear local music on commercial radio? Wouldn't it be nice to hear something other than the same fucking songs recycled over and over again? The world needs more John Peels & Vin Scelsas and less Clear Channels. "A balance between things that you know people will like and things that you think people will like." --- John Peel (1939-2004) Peace, Lazlo |
