Message From Lazlo

Happy Memorial Day.

It is important today to take the time to remember those who have given their life for the great freedoms we are allowed.

I in no way want to take away from remembering these people, but I'd like to use my space here this week to remember something else too.

This past Wednesday a piece of local history was demolished. The Palace Amusements, which had been closed since 1988, gave way to the wrecking ball. The Palace had been a part of Asbury Park since 1888, immortalized in Bruce Springsteen's music, home to the short-lived Asbury Park Rock 'N Roll Museum, and a place I went many times every summer until it closed. It was not a sparkling amusment park like Six Flags or Disney World, It was dingy, dirty and a bit seedy looking, but for many like myself it was a place of pure enjoyment nonetheless. And now it's gone...

Upon learning of it's demise Wednesday and seeing photos of the demolition, I wrote this poem:

a little piece of my childhood died today
the memories will not fade away
the sea green building with the big arcade
those were the days...

I remember the brass rings on the carousel
I remember the little things
and now it's been torn down
a picture of rubble, pouring rain

even the skies cried for the Palace
for it was a magical place to us all
once a place of wonder
soon to be another mall

I'll never feel the joy again of bumping cars
or fear the lion's roar in the fun house
kind of ironic isn't it
seeing as it faded away like a mouse

oh those summer days my friend
oh those summer days
laughing and having fun
but now my childhood has gone away
and there's nothing I can say
to bring it back

Tillie ain't smiling anymore
for today he died
Tillie ain't smiling no more
and neither am I...

today they tore down the Palace
on a rainy May day
they may have torn down the Palace
but they'll never take my memories away...

Peace,
Lazlo
