2. MESSAGE FROM LAZLO

So I am watching the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductions and Elvis Costello is singing, "what's so funny about peace, love and understanding", and I think what is so funny about those things? Around the world we see a lack of it which may or may not be about to cause a war, but even in the local music scene there is a lack of peace, love and understanding.

Look on some of the other NJ scene website message boards and you'll see a hotbed of name calling and attacking of a local band just because it isn't your favorite, or for other personal reasons. There's also people attacking some of the other organizations that help NJ bands because maybe they were unable to help a particular local band. We attack and attack and attack, and what does it do? Nothing but destory our already crumbling local music scene.

What I see right now in our local music scene are a bunch of little cliques of bands, and each clique helps it's group of bands out, in some cases working against other groups of bands. We can look at these cliques as if they are countries and the scene as a whole is the UN. If we can find a way to work together as a "United Nation of Bands", maybe we can resuscitate our scene and make it strong and prosperous for the bands, but if we'd rather attack one another than we could wipe out the entire scene.

I know, I am standing on a soapbox rambling on, sort of relating our impending war on Iraq to our local music scene, and my analogy may or may not make sense to you, but my point hopefully will. We need to band together as a scene and stop the negativity towards one another. It's not productive and ultimately it hurts the credibility of the scene as a whole.

If we can all work together, everyone doing there part (and not letting things fall to others), maybe we could actually get the music to the masses. There are a lot of things that stand in the way of the average local band getting mass attention, but in most cases talent isn't it. If we can show this talent to large numbers of people in a setting that people will come out to, nothing can stop a local band...

...but first we have to stop the negativity. Every band in the scene needs to put egos aside and learn that, "peace, love and understanding", amongst the scene, is the only way we can make something of it.

I have a lot of ideas I want to work to institute in the (hopefully) near future, but it will take us all working together to do it.

Are we ready to band together and save our scene?

I hope so.
