Where to begin...well last night was another great Artist Amplification show, featuring 4 great bands. The Crayons, who took time out from working on their new "electric" album, opened the show. Following them was Bastards of Melody, who was not only profiled in the Aquarian this past week, but lead singer Paul Bastard (ok so his name is Paul Crane, but doesn't Paul Bastard sound cooler?) celebrates a birthday tomorrow (Happy Birthday Paul). Small A.M. put on a set playing many tracks from their forthcoming CD, which I am enjoying listening to an advance copy right now. Look for a review soon. Billy closed out the night, proving that banjos can rock.
Not only was it a great night of music, but any night when pretty women are buying me drinks and making me napkin roses and a Starburst wrapper figure (don't ask) can't be a bad night :) I also have to send birthday wishes to Artist Amp's head honcho, and all around nice guy, Andy Gesner who shares a birthday on Tuesday with the original man in black, Johnny Cash (no he's not from NJ, but Johnny Cash is too cool not to mention).
Moving on...I'm starting a new thread on the message board, which came out of a conversation I had with Dawn Botti, lead singer of Slushpuppy.
Slushpuppy have just finished recording a new disc (produced by High Speed Chase's Chris Gibson), and I had asked Dawn if they had recorded their song, "deeper down", a great song I have enjoyed hearing live. They have in fact recorded the song, which I was told clocked in at around 6 minutes including a, "really long jam at the end and me (Dawn) going crazy on vox." Because of the length they decided to also put a 4 minute edit of the song on the album so that, "the record weasels don't freak out and think we're a jam band."
This lead me to question that if by editing a song, the listener is not getting the full effect of the song. Imagine a 4 minute edit of Freebird or Stairway, would the songs still have the same impact? Dawn had a good explanation by saying, "I think what we realized is that the long "jam" we usually do at the end of that song doesn't necessarily have the same impact on CD as it does live." Which makes sense, even the Dead didn't put 30 minute versions of their songs on their studio albums.
So I ask you as fellow music fans and musicians alike, how do you feel about songs be edited? Post your thoughts here.
Two quick notes...
