It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...oh wait it is Christmas! Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season. I will keep this yuletide message short as I want to get back to the egg nog and watching "Emmit Otter's Jug Band Christmas" :)
There is finally some new stuff in the Literature Corner. Apologies for the lax in updating that of late. NJ writers can always submit their stuff in by E-mailing me at lazlo@blowupradio.com.
Over the weekend the holiday cheer was being spread over at Maxwells with four amazing local bands rocking. The night opened with a set by Akasa, who's CD "Open the sound" I have enjoyed for quite some time. It was great to finally see them live, as they add a whole new energy to their songs. Darby Jones followed with a rock set that made me take notice of these guys, whose music I was largely unfamiliar with, a matter I will be rectifying. The always entertaining Evelyn Forever put on a set playing songs from all 3 of their CD's as well as some stuff from their forthcoming EP. Capping off the night was a set from Slushpuppy. The last time I saw this hard rock band, they had just added bassist, Cory Baker and had only shortly before that added guitarist Rich Sarnicola to the line-up, and they sounded good, but had not yet congealed as a band. Well, a few months have passed and they sound like they've gelled now. Ripping through old songs and some new ones, the band sounded in their prime. Rich's guitar work adds so much depth to the sound, that we will forgive him for his 80's hair band guitar ;) And Dawn's vocal performance...it's almost as if she is channeling Janis Joplin, actually, if Joplin was alive today, she might be doing a hard rock blues sound like Slushpuppy's.
In closing, let me quote Herschel Krustofsky (aka Krusty the Clown), "Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanza, and a very solemn Ramadan." And just to cover all bases, a Merry ACHOO (Another Commercialized Holiday Of Overspending) to everyone else :)
