Friday morning- 6:56am. I step out of the shower as I do every morning and turn on VH1 to see what video they are overplaying, before turning to CNN. But VH1 wasn't showing another Dave Matthews Band video, they were showing a live George Harrison performance of his song, "all things must pass". I immediatley knew he was no longer with us. I am not going to take much of this space to talk of his passing, but if you are looking for New Jersey music relevance, here it is. We all know the Beatles influenced rock of today, but George Harrison may truly have been one of the most influential of the Beatles, yet he hid in the sahdows behind Lennon and McCartney. It was George that added the spiritual and Middle Eastern flairs to the Beatles music, which has been used ever since by bands like Led Zepplin to Dave Matthews Band. George also wrote great pop songs like, "here comes the sun", and was an outstanding lead guitarist (listen to "while my guitar gently weeps"). The influence of the Beatles and George Harrison can be heard in all of the music played on blowupradio.com, and that is a feat few bands can say they have accomplished. May George Harrison rest in peace in the great Rock and Roll Hall of fame in the sky.
On to happier news...the holiday season is upon us, and Totawa's own 13 Hands has given us the gift of a music video for his soon to be X-Mas classic, "Everday Christmas". You can watch the video by going to http://www.laidoffcentral.com/christmas/. If you look closely, you may even see me in my music video acting debut (I'm the one dressed in black, with the Santa hat). I just wish I had brought my own video camera to tape the people driving by the outdoor residential set decorated with Christams cheer, since this was shot back in September.
I am sitting here listening to a rough cut of the compilation CD for the big blowupradio.com anniversary bash to benefit Toys for Tots, and boy does it sound good. Remember to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the benefit show (December 15th @ Broadway Central Cafe) to get your copy. I will do a complete track listing in next weekend's newsletter.
Quickly, since I've used a lot of space already, I was at the Court Tavern on Friday to see a great night of local music featuring Little T & One Track Mike (who still get props for representin' NJ, even though they are now as famous as their song suggests), Billy, Guy Incognito, Val Emmich (see him live at blowupradio.com's anniversary bash December 15th...I am becoming PT Barnum...), and a rare performance from Jim Testa (witty folk, with a tinge of rap?!?!?). Not only was it a fun night of music, but the new issue of Jersey Beat was there (published by Jim Testa). It's so refreshing to see a music magazine about music (not fashion and style like many of the mainstream music mags), and equally important, a magazine with more pages with words then pages with advertising. Look for Jersey Beat on magazine shelves throughout NJ.
